Volta Audio headphones feature a beautiful dynamic fluid display that reacts to your music. The underlying principles of how this works are relatively simple, but fitting everything into a headphone form factor proved extremely challenging.
Ferrofluid was first developed by NASA in 1963, to be used as rocket fuel that could be manipulated with magnets in zero-gravity. In 2025, Volta puts it on the side of your head to help you express yourself.
Inside the headphone is a thin but large diameter electromagnet that is pressed up against the back of the plastic fluid container, efficiently moving the blob of ferrofluid inside to the rhythm of the song. LED lights are placed around the container, shining in through the sides and illuminating every surface and curve of the fluid.
The circuit board that controls both the fluid movement and speakers is shaped like a donut, with a hole in the middle to perfectly accommodate the electromagnet and save space. Every aspect of the design has been rigorously optimized for usability and comfort.
The outer container can easily be popped out and replaced with a different color or style of ferrofluid, allowing for endless customization options.
